Welcome to my virtual classroom!
I hope that you find this space helpful.
This is my first year at Hillcrest Middle School and I am so excited to be joining the staff! I am available before school, and after school for help. Please feel free to contact me by email anytime, or call and leave a message in the main office. I would be happy to set up a time to talk or to meet. My goal as a math teacher is to help students develop their critical thinking skills and open their minds to the infinite possibilities that math has to offer. I believe that everyone can be successful in math, if they choose to, and that mistakes can be the best way to spur growth and change. My hope is that you enter my classroom with an open mind and that you come prepared to work hard. If you would like to know more about my views on math, please explore the links at the top for homework help or general classroom information, or follow the links in the topics below for more on my classroom philosophy of teaching.
During our first weeks of school, Students worked in groups to complete a task! Working in groups is an important part of learning in math class and students took this task very seriously!
Growth Mindset
Neuroscience tells us that the brain is incredibly flexible. The harder you work at solving a problem the more your brain will grow and improve. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, if you work hard at understanding them you will improve more than by giving up to failure. Be creative about how you approach problems (draw a picture or diagram, act it out, show your steps in a cartoon, create a rap). This can be helpful for you as you deepen your understanding, but it can also help others to make connections. Have a sense of humor, and never give up. This will be a great year of learning for all of us! Click on the brain left to learn more. For more about math learning and growth mindset visit the youcubed website below.
